The Originators’ Northern Soul & the Fujifilm X-System

The Originators are a Dutch Northern Soul band from the Amsterdam-Utrecht area. Actually they are one of a very limited number of live-bands working that musical field today.

Back in June I had the opportunity to see them live on stage for my very first time and thought it might be a good opportunity to check out the super-low-light-gig-shooting abilities of the X-Pro 1 and and X-T1. To cut a long story short, it was worth every penny. I mean both, the admittance for the concert as well as the big bucks I’ve spent for the photo gear during the last months. Well, as to the second point I knew that before already.

The Originators are an eleven-strong bunch of highly gifted and professional musicians and they are performing a real strong show on stage. Personally I would always classify the gig amongst my favourite top ten of the last years. So, if you have the chance go and see them, I’m sure you won’t regret. If you like, find some more information here.

Finally, for the gear-heads: hardware for the evening was Fujifilm X-Pro1 and X-T1, Fujinon XF 18mm F2, XF 35mm F1.4, XF 56mm F1.2, XC 50-230mm F4.5-6.7 as well as Zeiss Touit 2.8/12mm.

Fujifilm X-T1, Fujinon XF 56mm and the streets of Berlin (Part 2)

So, here comes part 2 of my adventures in Berlin with the X-T1 and the XF56mmf1.2 R which turned to be my favourite lens during the last weeks. This time I tried to make monochrome magic work for me. For those who care about processing details: all shots were made in colour (mostly with VELVIA film simulation) and were converted to black and white in Photoshop and sometimes contrast enhanced. But that’s all about editing. No cropping or sharpening. Click to enlarge to full size.

Sorry for the little words. I’m quite busy these days. More to come as soon as possible.

Fujifilm X-T1, Fujinon XF 56mm and the streets of Berlin (Part 1)

Recently I went to Berlin for some days and of course my new achievements the FUJIFILM X-T1 and the FUJINON LENS XF56mmF1.2 R had to go with me. I have to admit that it took some time to get used to the X-T1 as the controls are pretty much different to my old friend X-Pro1. But the more I worked with it and discovered its features the more I started loving it.

The other great delight was the FUJINON XF 56mm. Boy, what a lens. It stayed on the camera almost all of the time during my stay and became my favourite lens instantly.

Enough wourds. Let pictures speak. Click to enlarge to full size.

My third contribution to this week’s Photo Challenge, again with my favourite model. Actually I didn’t shoot this in spring but in late summer about three years ago. Some seconds after taking this frame I turned away for an instant to have a look at the result and suddenly heard a loud “splash!”. Now, guess what had happened…

My first entry for this weeks photo challenge. Shot on the location of Zeche Zollverein (Colliery Zollverein) in my former hometown Essen, once the biggest coalmine in the world. I have spent a whole daytime there shooting recently. Without exageration I can say that it was quite a fruitful day. I will post much more of this in the future and at that opportunity will tell you some more about the history of this impressive place.

When it comes to architecture in Munich you just can’t ignore the Olympic Stadium. Opened to the public in 1972 it’s still one of the biggest attractions and still one of my favourite locations round here.

Schloss Nymphenburg & ZEISS Touit® 2.8/12 mm

Premiere today. The first bilingual post here. And it will become the new standard on this blog. From now on, all posts are going to be written in German and English language, except when there’s very little words that do not need translation.
It was about time for a new entry to the Fujifilm X vehicle fleet. The wide-angle range needed an expansion. After a longer phase of research and thinking and research and rethinking I finally took the decision for the ZEISS Touit 2.8/12. First impression: just marvellous! The whole piece feels like everything is put together very well, following a well-conceived conception of clarity and simplicity (designwise). When making my researches in the web, more than once I read complaints about the very modern and sleek design that doesn’t fit with the retro-style of the X-Pro1. Frankly speaking, maybe that’s right, but personally I am not wearing a camera as a fashion accessory. I’m just interested in the picture quality it provides and not about the way it looks.

Only negative point for me was the fact that the aperture ring is turning very smooth. To smooth. That means that in the moment you’re holding the camera at the lens or you’re just picking it out of your bag the aperture ring will certainly be turned and you have to adjust it again. Apart from that, the lens delivers exactly what I expected for its (far away from bargain) price and from its focal length. No issues detected.

Chance brought it about that on my way back I passed by Schloss Nymphenburg (Nymphenburg Palace) in the west of Munich. The buildings and the surrounding parks date back to the 17th century and the castle itself is one of the biggest royal palaces in Europe and a highly frequented attraction in Munich today. The extremely spacious edifices and park areas were begging for some superwideangle-shots so I decided to follow their request. As I only had 45 minutes to explore the whole territory (which normally deserves about half a day) I nearly shot in running mode. Considering that the results are alright as I think. See them below. Hope you enjoy.

Click on the pictures to see them in original size (4896 x 3264 pix). No sharpening, no lens correction. What you see is what the lens (and the camera) can do. All photos where shot in colour and and with the exception of two converted into black and white afterwards. All photos here are for demonstration only and were not made or published for marketing or selling purposes.

My son has a strong passion for exploring dead spaces he finds everywhere. He definitely does not suffer from claustrophobia. This time it was the cavity underneath the window display in a sporting goods store. The owner of the shop must have been very glad that somebody finally collected all the dirt of an estimated 30 years there with his clothes.
